Researchers from the University of South Australia have found that low levels of vitamin D are associated with high levels of inflammation. The findings published in the International Journal of Epidemiology revealed that vitamin D and C-reactive proteins are important biomarkers that can be used to identify people at risk of or severity of chronic illnesses with an inflammatory component. Inflammation is part of the body′s natural healing process, but a persistent inflammatory state can contribute to a variety of conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disease.

According to the lead researcher, Dr. Ang Zhou, the study findings revealed that boosting vitamin D in people with a deficiency may reduce chronic inflammation. In the study, the genetic data of 2,94,970 participants was examined to observe the association between vitamin D and C-reactive protein levels. The team found a one-way relationship between low levels of vitamin D and high levels of C-reactive protein.

Dr. Zhou stated that high levels of C-reactive protein are generated by the liver in response to inflammation, especially when the body is experiencing chronic inflammation, thereby raising the levels of C-reactive protein. The study also raised the possibility that adequate supplementation with vitamin D might mitigate the complications arising from obesity and reduce the risk or severity of chronic illnesses with an inflammatory component. She concluded that the findings of the study highlighted the consequences of vitamin D deficiency and shed light on the importance of the wide-ranging effects of hormonal vitamin D.
